Abstract

This book discusses ethical behavior through the genocidal stages of the Holocaust. Paul E. Wilson first looks at the antisemitism in Germany and Europe beginning in the decades preceding the Nazis reign of terror, and goes on to discuss the ethical decisions made in the initial stages that moved society toward genocide. The author maintains that the stages of genocide represent subtle changes that can be happening within a society in response to the moral choices made by actors. By giving attention to the stages of genocide in the Holocaust, this book contributes to the overall understanding of how the Holocaust was possible, and encourages the moral community to join the watch for the development of genocide in the modern world. Paul E. Wilson is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Shaw University, USA.

Abstract

This book focuses on a central notion in Theodor. W. Adorno’s philosophy: the nonidentical. The nonidentical is what our conceptual framework cannot grasp and must therefore silence, the unexpressed other of our rational engagement with the world. This study presents the nonidentical as the multidimensional centerpiece of Adorno’s reflections on subjectivity, truth, suffering, history, art, morality and politics, revealing the intimate relationship between how and what we think. Adorno’s work, written in the shadow of Auschwitz, is a quest for a different way of thinking, one that would give the nonidentical a voice – as the somatic in reasoning, the ephemeral in truth, the aesthetic in cognition, the other in society. Adorno’s philosophy of the nonidentical reveals itself not only as a powerful hermeneutics of the past, but also as an important tool for the understanding of modern phenomena such as xenophobia, populism, political polarization, identity politics, and systemic racism.

Abstract

This book discusses the issues underlying contemporary Holocaust fiction. Using Gillian Rose’s theory of Holocaust piety, it argues that, rather than enhancing our understanding of the Holocaust, contemporary fiction has instead become overly focused on gratuitous representations of bodies in pain. The book begins by discussing the locations and imagery which have come to define our understanding of the Holocaust, before then highlighting how this gradual simplification has led to an increasing sense of emotional distance from the historical past. Holocaust fiction, the book argues, attempts to close this emotional and temporal distance by creating an emotional connection to bodies in pain. Using different concepts relating to embodied experience – from Sonia Kruks’ notion of feeling-with to Alison Landsberg’s prosthetic memory – the book analyses several key examples of Holocaust literature and film to establish whether fiction still possesses the capacity to approach the Holocaust impiously. David John Dickson is a literature specialist, focusing on fiction relating to the Holocaust. He has previously published papers relating to the ethical representation of the Holocaust past – from Heather Morris’s presentation of gendered suffering, to the fictional representation of death in the gas chamber. He also has an interest in the history of the Jewish ghetto police, and has published a paper relating to the confessional diary of Calel Perechodnik.

Abstract

This is a significant book that investigates how the French internal resistance and external Free French movement were financed during the Second World War. It brings together the secretive financial aspects of resistance inside France with those under the control of the Free French movement in London. To date, there have been a number of studies that have followed the Gaullist movement, but none have studied how they were funded. This exploration also demonstrates the global scale of the war. It shows how the Free French were not simply a European, Atlantic-based movement, but were, in fact, colonial and operated on a global scale, shedding light on French relations with their colonies in Africa and the Pacific. It underlines the role played by expatriates, those belonging to the French diaspora and third-country nationals, in Allied nations and neutral countries, including Central and South America. Through the combination of digital humanities methods, including social network analysis and GIS (Geographic Information Systems), the Allied funding for de Gaulle's movement and the internal resistance will be unveiled, for the first time, in its entirety. The painstaking reconstruction of the financial records of the Free French and their lines of subsidy is a novel approach that sheds new light onto the financial networks between French, British and American officials who made this financing possible. This illuminates the complexity of international relations in a time of war. Using a combination of economic and accounting analysis, as well as primary-sourced historical research, this book distinctively applies sociological methodologies to this long-held question. This book will be of interest to those in economics, economic history, finance, accounting, digital humanities, modern history, international relations, political science and war studies. David Foulk is a doctoral student at the University of Oxford, investigating the economic considerations relating to the French resistance. His research interests include economic history, French modern history, digital humanities and heritage tourism. .

Abstract

In this volume, contributors reflect on how to teach and mediate difficult history from the perspectives of guides. Too often, their activities are undervalued and taken for granted. Guides represent an important, often forgotten group of educators. This volume takes a global view on guiding at memorial sites and museums in Europe, North America, and South Africa. The contributors to this volume show from different research traditions that it is worth understanding more about the guides’ personal interests, their motivations, and their concept of guiding. Authors apply methodologies from the social sciences to describe the guides’ point of view. Complementing the various approaches in tour guide research, a detailed linguistic analysis sheds light on a survivor’s testimony echoed in the guides’ language. The studies gathered in this volume open up an orientation for further approaches to tour guiding based on and centered around “authentic” materials from guides. The Editor Anja Ballis, PhD, professor and chair of German Language Education at the University of Munich. The focus of her research has been on Holocaust education, teaching with digital media, and textbook research. She is also known for her research on interactive 3D testimonies, tour guides at Holocaust museums and memorial sites and as an editor of “Holocaust Education—Historical Learning—Human Rights Education” (since 2019, Springer Science).

Abstract

This book uncovers the history of a group of Jewish workers and merchants in the Amsterdam diamond industry during the Holocaust. They and their families were exempt from deportation for a long time, but were eventually deported to Bergen-Belsen. In the end, almost all of the men perished, and the women barely survived slave-labour. Their children were left to die in the camp, but were miraculously saved by the intervention of a Jewish Polish woman, ‘nurse Luba’. The main sources on which this book is based are video testimonies of the surviving members of this group, personal interviews, minutes of interviews taken down in shorthand shortly after the war, and personal documents such as letters, archival documents, and autobiographical books.
